HR directors have a unique skillset that more than meets the requirements for many NED and often executive roles. Traditionally for most organisations, the board is usually composed of experienced, senior leaders who focus on high-level issues such as finance and strategy. The lack of HR representation at board level is surprising once you consider all of the issues that are discussed in the boardroom that are pertinent to their role. However with greater numbers of people and talent issues at the centre of key governance issues and HR contributing a vital role to ensure their organisations are prepared to meet current and future business needs, why is HR is hugely underrepresented at board level?
