How Worried Should We Be? Cyber Threats in the Housing Sector

Ben Aung

Chief Risk Officer, Sage

Ben joined Sage Group as Global Chief Information Security Officer in 2018, after almost 20 years in the UK Government. Sage is the UK’s largest technology company and the world’s leading provider of integrated accounting, payroll and payments systems to small and mid-sized businesses. Ben has overall responsibility for the security of Sage’s global technology estate and customer-facing products and services for over 2 million customers in 23 countries. Ben was appointed Sage’s Chief Risk Officer in January 2021 and now leads the Group’s Risk, Controls and Compliance functions, in addition to his cyber security responsibilities.

Following a career in national security, Ben left public service as Deputy UK Government Chief Security Officer, based in the Cabinet Office. Ben was responsible for all aspects of protective security across 48 government departments and over 400,000 civil servants. Ben’s remit included cyber security, personnel security, counterterrorism, counterespionage and investigation of major breaches, including contravention of the Official Secrets Act. While in government Ben worked within UK’s crisis response apparatus (COBR) and was involved in numerous national incidents, including the 2017 WannaCry outbreak.

Rajiv Peters

Chief Information Officer, Notting Hill Genesis

Rajiv graduated with an MSc in Information systems and stayed on at the London School of Economics researching the use of technology and democracy. Subsequently, he was part of the early local authority digitalisation projects working on behalf of the office of the deputy prime minister and various local authorities. The digital standards that he created were to be used mandatorily for English LAs for around eight years. In the commercial sector, Rajiv has been part of several tech start-ups, either as a supplier or, as part of the start-up itself. After 15 years in the commercial sector and having done everything from setting up subsidiary companies offshore, to creating technical architectures as a consultant, to getting new software products out to market. Rajiv decided to go back to public sector and started at Notting Hill Genesis in 2017. Rajiv is the Chief Information Officer at NHG, and was brought in as part of NHGs plans to digitalise and innovate services . The business operating model was remodelled to leveraging technology to great success. Today NHG has over half its households signed up to their digital portal and over million transactions have been competed, predominantly, payments and repairs services. To do this, Rajiv had to build a team from the bottom up and is now has one of the most innovative teams in the sector.

Jason Wickens

Former Chief Information Officer, Southern Housing Group

Jason has more than 20 years’ experience in managing technology and business transformation across numerous sectors including Housing, Financial Services, Retail, and Not for Profit.  He’s held permanent, consulting and interim roles at an executive level and driven improvements across people, process and technology.

In his most recent role of Chief Information Officer at Southern Housing Group he transformed the technology, data and business change functions and strengthened the organisations cyber security posture. During his tenure he has delivered key digital enhancements including an omni-channel servicing platform, a new resident portal and a market-leading Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution.

As a regular guest speaker and adviser, he leverages his multi-sector experience to enable social landlords to deliver strategic change and increase the value they provide to their residents.

Jo Sedley-Burke

Former Managing Director, Sovereign Business Integration Group PLC

She specialises in Cyber resilience and Governance, is an Independent Member of the Norwich City Council Compliance Delivery Group and the Managing Director of a National Removals and Logistics Business called Trunk Logistics. She is also the Chair of a National Charity, WAY Widowed and Young.

Having worked at a Senior Level for North Somerset Unitary Authority, Knightstone HA and Home Group, she joined one of the largest providers of software to the public sector in the UK, Civica. After which she became the Managing Director for Sovereign Business Integration Group Plc, a Managed Services and Consultancy Company providing specialising in the Housing Sector.
